Added Sugar & Sweeteners Testing for UAE FTA Excise Tax Compliance

Added Sugar & Sweeteners Testing for UAE FTA Excise Tax Compliance

NLRC is a MoIAT-approved and ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory providing high-precision testing of added sugars, total sugars, and sweeteners to support compliance with the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) excise tax regulations effective 1 January 2026.

Under the updated FTA framework, manufacturers, importers, and stockpilers of sweetened beverages are required to obtain an “Emirates Conformity Certificate for Sugar and Sweeteners Content in Beverages” prior to product registration or any product data updates on the EmaraTax platform. This certificate is issued exclusively based on analytical results generated by an accredited UAE laboratory, such as NLRC.

Advanced Analytical Instrumentation & Methodology

NLRC employs state-of-the-art chromatographic and mass spectrometric technologies to ensure accuracy, specificity, and regulatory defensibility:

  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
Used for the quantitative determination of mono- and disaccharides such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose, and maltose. HPLC ensures high precision and repeatability for total sugar profiling.
  • Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)
Utilized for highly sensitive and selective detection of sugars alcohols (polyols), natural and artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, acesulfame-K, sucralose, saccharin, Steviol glycosides, cyclamates, neotame, alitame and many others permitted sweeteners. LC-MS/MS techniques provide robust confirmation at trace levels, ensuring compliance with regulatory thresholds.
  • Liquid Chromatography–Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (LC-IRMS)
Applied for the discrimination between naturally occurring sugars and added sugars by measuring stable carbon isotope ratios (¹³C/¹²C). This technique is essential for verifying claims related to “no added sugar” and for identifying exogenous sugar sources derived from C₄ plants such as corn or sugarcane.

All methods are fully validated, quality-controlled, and compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
